The Presence of Absence ‘The Presence of Absence’ takes a short extract from a longer interview with a young Vietnamese woman in which she reflects on her experience of loss. The piece was conceived as a brief radiophonic play in which the process in which the grief-stricken mind is constantly going over the same ground, the same events, the same guilt, is here represented by the numerous ‘voices’ in the mind going over the same old fragments. It is these ‘voices in the head’ which, in the original 8-channel version, (reduced here to stereo mp3) surround the central narration of the main character. |
